Prevent Blindness to Honor CDC Scientist, Teams Up with ThinOPTICS, Announces 10th Annual Swing Fore Sight

Prevent Blindness has named Dr. John E. Crews, a health scientist for the Vision Health Initiative within the Division of Diabetes Translation at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, as the 2017 recipient of the Jenny Pomeroy Award for Excellence in Vision and Public Health. Additionally, Prevent Blindness is teaming up with ThinOPTICS to educate the public about eye health, and announced the 10th annual Swing Fore Sight Golf Tournament.

For more than 40 years, Crews has reportedly been dedicated to vision rehabilitation and disability research. He reportedly served as the lead scientist with the Disability and Health Team in the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities in the CDC. Crews also worked for the Michigan Commission for the Blind and the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Rehabilitation Research and Development Center on Aging in Atlanta, and has authored two books and co-authored more 115 publications.

Crews will be presented with the award at the 6th Annual Prevent Blindness Focus on Eye Health National Summit in Washington, DC, on June 28, 2017.

To help educate the public on eye health, Prevent Blindness is reportedly teaming up with consumer-oriented eyewear brand ThinOPTICS. Through the partnership, ThinOPTICS has reportedly pledged to assist the nonprofit in promoting its 20/20 @ 40 initiative — a public awareness program that encourages people in their 40’s to get a baseline eye exam to help track any potentially problematic changes in the eyes as they age.

ThinOPTICS has also reportedly partnered with decorated Paralympian and acclaimed contemporary artist Gregory Burns to develop a custom line of ThinOPTICS inspired by his most popular artworks. A portion of the proceeds from each pair of Gregory Burns Collection ThinOPTICS sold will be donated to Prevent Blindness to further aid them in their efforts to fight blindness and save sight.
