 AOA Lays Out Goals for Children's Eye Health Amidst COVID-19

As a result of COVID-19 precautions, children have had to spend more time at home and switch to virtual methods for learning. These practices lead to staring for prolonged periods at screen-based devices, exacerbating existing issues with excessive screen time. In a recent article, the American Optometric Association (AOA) emphasizes the importance of children's access to comprehensive eye care, especially at this critical time.

In an AOA-led Emergency Children’s Vision Summit in March, frontline doctors of optometry discussed the consequences of the crisis on children’s vision. Moreover, the doctors aren’t alone in their concern about the impact of the pandemic on the health of America’s children, as members of Congress have started hearings to collect information and assess needed policy changes.

Among the overall goals, the doctors advocate for better public education, especially parents, on the merits of comprehensive eye exams.
