Social enterprise VisionSpring and Bangladesh-based international development organization BRAC recently announced they have provided one million pairs of affordable eyeglasses to low-income consumers, achieving major milestones both in scaling a social entrepreneurship model, and in expanding access to vision services in Bangladesh.
Started in 2006, the Reading Glasses for Improved Livelihoods Program provides free eye screenings and low-cost reading glasses that, according to the organizations, can help prevent middle-aged workers from experiencing drops in efficiency and productivity associated with natural aging of the eyes.
Additionally, BRAC's network community health workers work to reach customers in the most remote areas of Bangladesh, and have also created a referral system for nearly 6l0,000 customers who need higher-level care for cataracts and other eye conditions.
