 The Lens Update — January 3, 2017

Here’s a look at the latest news in lenses and lens-related technologies. 

  • The International Association of Contact Lens Educators (IACLE) is currently looking for nominees from each of its global regions — Asia Pacific, Europe/Africa-Middle East, and the Americas — for IACLE Contact Lens Educator of the Year. Each winner will receive a bursary of up to $3,000 towards the cost of attending the 40th British Contact Lens Association Clinical Conference and Exhibition. Nominations are due by January 31st.
  • Alcon issued a statement following a court's ruling on the company's attempt to block the enforcement of Utah’s Contact Lens Consumer Protection Act, announcing its plans to end its unilateral pricing policy (UPP) effective immediately.
  • Hoya Vision Care recently acquired Pinnacle Optical, LLC of Birmingham, Ala. (see press release below). Pinnacle's headquarters will reportedly be combined with Hoya's existing Birmingham operation into one laboratory location to strengthen its local presence.
  • Rochester Optical is now offering prescription lenses for one of the latest smart glasses to hit the market, Snapchat Spectacles. The company also offers prescription solutions for other wearable technology options, including Microsoft HoloLens™, Google Glass, Epson Moverio™, and Intel Recon Jet™.
  • SynergEyes, Inc. has entered into a licensing agreement with Tangible Science LLC, allowing the company to offer Tangible Hydra-PEG polymer coating to practices and patients. SynergEyes reportedly received FDA clearance for Tangible Hydra-PEG in August, and the lubricious coating is now available on Duette and Duette Progressive lenses.
  • Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. has launched an all-new Digital Guide by ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses as a resource to help ECPs develop or optimize a digital marketing strategy to encourage new patient visits, stay engaged with current patients, and keep them informed of new contact lens options.
  • And Valley Contax recently announced its new Custom Stable Vision Project, aimed at providing deeply discounted Custom Stable scleral lenses to those who may not be able to afford them. ECPs can submit patients to the program for consideration through Valley Contax's website.
