A new study conducted by the University of São Paulo says new tests are needed to establish quality and safe limits for lenses' UV filters as sunwear ages.
According to researchers, over time sun exposure can cause sunglass lenses to become lighter in color and can also diminish their impact resistance. In Europe, Brazil, New Zealand and Australia, the sunwear aging test reportedly uses a sun simulator to look at how much a particular lens will deteriorate as a result of sun exposure. For a more accurate predictor, researchers found current aging test should be upped from 50 hours of sun exposure to 134.6 hours.
The study was recently published in BioMedical Engineering Online.
