OneSight Launches Mobile Vision Care Program with Verizon, Takes Sustainable Vision Center Model to Africa

Nonprofit organization OneSight recently announced it was partnering with Verizon to launch a Mobile Vision Care Program, and is expanding its sustainable vision center model to Africa.

The Mobile Vision Care program with Verizon will reportedly provide free vision screenings and care to students in an effort to impact academic achievement. The program also includes health tech start-up Smart Vision Labs and the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Optometry. OneSight will reportedly train school nurses and health coordinators to incorporate Smart Vision Labs' SVOne mobile autorefractor into their vision screening process, while SUNY College of Optometry will act as the program's research partner by collecting data to evaluate the program's impact.

The program was recently launched at the OneSight Vision Care Clinic in Omaha, Neb., where over 600 Omaha Public School students reportedly received free vision screenings, comprehensive eye exams and glasses.

And OneSight recently announced it has now taken its sustainable vision center model to the African country of Zambia.

According to OneSight, Zambia is one of the poorest nations with the greatest need for vision correction in the world, ranking sixth with a 37 percent need. Through a partnership with the Zambian Ministry of Health, OneSight will be opening two pilot vision centers in Zambia this year. Additionally, volunteers from eyewear company Luxottica have already conducted an evaluation trip to Zambia and are now preparing to travel to the first vision centers in September.
