Study Finds Eye Exams in Asymptomatic Patients Have High Rate of Vision Changes

A new study has found more than half of routine vision exams in patients with no eye-related complaints resulted in a vision prescription change or other changes in their care.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Waterloo, examined 6,400 patients of which 40 percent were asymptomatic. Of the patients with no complaints, 58 percent had at least one significant change after their eye exam, including vision prescription changes, new diagnoses or management changes. Researchers also found older patients were more likely to have significant changes.

The research was published in the June issue of Optometry and Vision Science, the official journal of the American Academy of Optometry.
