Coefficient Of Friction Of 1-day Acuvue® Trueye® And Acuvue® Oasys® Brands Comparable To The Human Cornea, Study Shows

BIRMINGHAM, UK (June 12, 2014) – The coefficient of friction (CoF) of 1-DAY ACUVUE® TruEye® Brand Contact Lenses (narafilcon A) and of ACUVUE® OASYS® Brand Contact Lenses (senofilcon A) were found to be comparable to that of the human cornea, according to new research presented at the 2014 British Contact Lens Association Clinical Conference (BCLA). The data demonstrated no statistically significant difference between CoF of human corneal tissue and 1-DAY ACUVUE® TruEye® Brand and ACUVUE® OASYS® Brand Contact Lenses at study baseline or following 18 hours of simulated wear.

“These results suggest that the lens surface of these two contact lens brands is as lubricious as the human cornea,” says Tawnya Wilson, O.D., Principal Research Optometrist at Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. “This is important because coefficient of friction has previously been shown to be one factor highly correlated with contact lens comfort1,2. 1-DAY ACUVUE® TruEye® and ACUVUE® OASYS® seem to mimic corneal properties that may help address end-of-day comfort for many of our patients.”

About the Study

CoF testing was conducted on 1-DAY ACUVUE® TruEye® and ACUVUE® OASYS® Brand Contact Lenses directly out of the package (0-hour) utilising a micro-tribometer in a tear-like fluid with phosphate buffer saline (300-310 mOsm/kg). The applied normal force varied between 0.25 and 4.0 mN with a measured stroke length of 1.0mm at normal blink speed of 0.1mm per second. A mucin-coated glass disc was used as counter surface mimicking the inner eyelid. A simulated aged cycling (18-hour) of the contact lenses was also completed using the same measurement methodology. The results were compared to CoF of human corneal tissue recently published using the same methodology3, and statistical analysis was conducted using an analysis of variance (ANOVA).

This study found that the 1-DAY ACUVUE® TruEye® LS mean (SD) 0-hour CoF was 0.0080 (0.001140) (N=13) and 0.0098 (0.002055) at 18-hour (N=4). ACUVUE® OASYS® LS mean (SD) 0-hour CoF was 0.0104 (0.001300) (N=10) and 0.0116 (0.001300) at 18-hour (N=10). The CoF of human corneal tissue is 0.0153 (0.002974).

Dunnett’s t-tests on least squares means from the ANOVA model revealed no statistical differences at 0.05 significance level between corneal tissue and each study contact lens at 0-hour and 18-hour: 1-DAY ACUVUE® TruEye® (0-hour) vs. cornea -0.007 (StdErr 0.003) (p=0.067); 1-DAY ACUVUE® TruEye® (18-hour) vs. cornea -0.006 (StdErr 0.004) (p=0.27); ACUVUE® OASYS® (0-hour) vs. cornea -0.005 (StdErr 0.003) (p=0.281); and, ACUVUE® OASYS® (18-hour) vs. cornea -0.004 (StdErr 0.003) (p=0.479).
