1-day Acuvue® Moist® Brand Contact Lenses Provide Relief To Patients Struggling With Contact Lens-related End Of Day Dryness, Study Shows

SEATTLE, WA (October 25, 2013) – Contact lens dryness and discomfort continue to be significant factors in patients’ dissatisfaction with contact lenses,1 and symptoms can be significant enough for patients to discontinue contact lens wear altogether.2-4 However, a new study reveals that 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® Brand Contact Lenses provide excellent comfort and clarity of vision to patients who are struggling with contact lens-related end of day dryness. The findings were presented today at The American Academy of Optometry meeting.

About the Study

Using data from a multi-site, randomized, monadic, one-week dispensing clinical study, a post-hoc analysis was conducted on patients randomized to receive 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® Brand who reported experiencing end of day dryness with their habitual lenses, the majority (86 percent) of whom were reusable lens wearers. Those patients who responded “slightly,” “moderately,” “very” or “extremely dry” when asked “How dry do your eyes feel at the end of the day when wearing your contact lenses?” were enrolled and included in the analysis. At the 1-week follow-up visit, patients were asked questions on a 1-5 Likert scale (excellent, very good, good, fair, and poor) regarding various aspects of subjective comfort and vision.

Eighty-three percent of patients who enrolled in the trial stated they had end of day dryness with their habitual contact lenses. After wearing 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® for one week, more than 70 percent of these patients reported 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® to be “excellent/very good” for the following attributes: overall comfort; feeling fresh and new longer during the day; comfort while working on the computer; absence of irritation throughout the whole day; vision not being foggy, cloudy or filmy; and, clarity of vision at the end of the day.

“The study results suggest that 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® daily disposable contact lenses may be a good choice for patients who have dryness symptoms with their habitual lens and to help struggling patients have a comfortable wearing experience,” says study co-author Dr. Kristy Canavan, Principal Research Optometrist, VISTAKON® Division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc.
