Vision Council Reports Almost $300M Revenue Growth in Vision Care Industry

According to the Vision Council's recently released quarterly VisionWatch market research report for the first quarter of 2017, the total vision care industry has generated $40.36 billion in revenue over the last year ending Q1 2017 — an increase of about $282 million over the previous year's totals.

The Q1 VisionWatch market research report — which is available for download by Vision Council members — reportedly states 22 million pairs of frames were sold during the first quarter of 2017, a 0.2 percent decline from the same period in 2016. However, sales of lenses were up 4.4 percent, contact lens sales up by 2 percent, and over-the-counter (OTC) reader sales were up by 2.5 percent.

The report also reportedly found 29.9 million eye exams were performed during the first quarter of 2017, which is 110,000 more exams than the same quarter in 2016. And 905,000 refractive surgeries were performed, a decrease of 1.9 percent from the same time period last year.

The VisionWatch report also found 45.4 percent of the U.S. adult population received an eye exam in the last year — a total of over 115 million exams generating $6.05 billion in dollar revenue. Of those adults, 57.5 percent made an eyewear purchase as a result of their exam, amounting to about 66.1 million transactions.
