 ASCO Awards Lifetime Achievement Award to OSU College of Optometry Dean Emeritus

The Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) recently announced the recipients of its 2017 Special Recognition Awards, including Dr. Melvin Shipp, dean emeritus of The Ohio State University, College of Optometry, who was presented with the ASCO Lifetime Achievement Award.

Shipp, who is also former assistant dean for clinical services and director of clinics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Optometry, was recognized for providing exceptional leadership to ASCO and to optometric education, making contributions to the optometric community, and displaying exemplary commitment and dedication to the association.

Other 2017 Special Recognition Award winners include Dr. Catherine McDaniel, associate professor of clinical optometry at The Ohio State University, who is winner of the 2017 ASCO Rising Star Award, reportedly for her outstanding contributions through teaching, scholarship, administration and professional service. The winner of the 2017 ASCO Ophthalmic Industry Leadership Award is Mike Elton, a recent retiree of Hoya. And Drs. Jamie Althoff and Gregory M. Fecho of NOVA Southeastern University, College of Optometry, and Dr. Patrick Hardigan of the College of Medicine at NOVA Southeastern University, are recipients of this year's Dr. Lester Janoff Award for Writing Excellence.
