Army and Navy optometry teams are working together to make more than 2,000 pairs of eyeglasses for those in need in Sri Lanka and Malaysia.
The glasses will be distributed as part of Pacific Partnership 2017 (PP17), through which a team will also be providing ocular triage support including treating ocular diseases and making referrals to local ophthalmologists, according to Capt. Frances M. Silva, and optometrist and commander of the Army's 166th Medical Detachment Optometry (MD OPT).
MD OPT and army optical laboratory specialists from the 62 Medical Brigade and 56 Multifunctional Medical Battalion are reportedly working with opticians from the Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB) Optical Support Unit’s Optical Fabrication Shop for this program. The NHB Optical Support Unit reportedly makes single vision glasses for eligible active duty and retired service members, and last year made over 16,000 pairs of glasses.
