AOA Urges Stakeholders to Make Eye Health a National Priority

The American Optometric Association (AOA) is urging government, private sector and nonprofit stakeholders to join forces and make eye health and vision care a national priority by implementing recommendations made by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering & Medicine (NASEM) in a foundational report, "Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow," which was released last September and recently discussed at a public workshop in Washington, DC.

As part of these efforts, AOA is reportedly leveraging Save Your Vision Month with a focus on improving public awareness of the dangers to eye health posed by prolonged use of digital devices. And through the end of March, the organization plans to drive media coverage in national outlets on blue light and digital eye strain awareness.

Additionally, AOA is reportedly continuing to talk with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) about bringing a cohesive surveillance system to life that will significantly increase our understanding of population eye health. And they plan to release soon pediatric vision care guidelines, which will reportedly constitute the only set of evidence-based guidelines for children's vision care that follow NASEM's guidance.
