UAB Optometry Offers New Vision Program for Student Athletes

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Optometry is offering a new eye care program to help provide comprehensive eye care, acute game-time care and state-of-the-art concussion baseline testing for UAB student athletes.

Through the program, called BlazerVision, student athletes' vision will be evaluated each preseason through an eye teaming assessment, looking at visual efficiency skills and providing contact lenses and recreational glasses as needed. Athletes will also receive a dilated eye exam to evaluate ocular health and assess risk related to sports impact and ocular trauma.

Then during each game, an optometrist will reportedly be on-site or on-call for any ocular injuries or emergencies that may occur. And each UAB athletic team will work with a dedicated optometrist who knows each student's vision history.

Additionally, vision faculty will provide preseason, postseason and immediate post-impact exposure concussion testing to student athletes.
