New Report Says Consistent Growth Leads to Strong U.S. Contact Lens Sales in 2016

A recent report released by ABB Optical Group found consistent growth led to strong sales of contact lenses in the United States in 2016, with daily disposables leading the charge.

According to ABB Optical Group — which distributes optical products to two-thirds of practicing optometrists nationwide — data on same-store sales showed sales of daily disposables were up nearly 23 percent and represented 76 percent of all growth in the category in 2016. Sales of torics were up 11 percent, driven predominantly by daily disposable torics which were up more than 36 percent, and multifocals posted gains of nearly 17 percent.

ABB reported reusable contact lenses were soft in 2016, with a slight decline of 0.4 percent. And last year, practices who partnered with ABB reportedly almost an 8 percent organic contact lens growth.

For the future, ABB representatives believe torics and multifocals will continue to be the growth drivers in daily disposables.
