ADA Publishes Updated Guidelines for Diabetic Retinopathy

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has issued updated guidelines on prevention, assessment and treatment of diabetic retinopathy for providers and for people with diabetes.

In their position statement, the ADA reportedly outlines the stages of diabetic retinopathy and highlights recommendations on optimal blood glycemic control and lowering blood pressure, as well as screening recommendations.

Additionally, the statement features information on diagnostic advancements, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and wide-field fundus photography. And it also discusses the latest in treatment modalities, such as intravitreous injection of anti–vascular endothelial growth factor agents.

The detailed recommendations are featured in the article, "Diabetic Retinopathy: A Position Statement by the American Diabetes Association," recently published online and scheduled to be published in the March 2017 issue of Diabetes Care.
