 The Lens Update — November 21, 2016

Here's a look at some of the latest news regarding the ophthalmic and contact lens industries. 

  • Bausch + Lomb has partnered with TerraCycle to launch the Bausch + Lomb #ONEbyONE recycling program for the recycling of used contact lenses, blister packs and top foils. Through the program, consumers can send in their recyclables for free or drop them off at ONE by ONE recycling bins at participating ECP offices.
  • Alcon recently introduced its new AIR OPTIX® plus HydraGlyde monthly replacement contact lenses at the American Academy of Optometry annual meeting. The new lenses combine two unique technologies — SmartShield® Technology for deposit resistance and the HydraGlyde® Moisture Matrix for longer-lasting lens surface moisture. The new lenses are expected to be available to U.S. patients in late February 2017. And Alcon also recently announced a new look for the U.S. only packaging of its DAILIES® AquaComfort Plus® contact lenses in 2017, featuring new educational elements and a patient helpline and email address.
  • PolyVue Inc. recently launched its new HD Dailies 90-pack contact lenses, allowing patients a 1-day lens option (see press release below). The HD Dailies reportedly provide the same high definition aspherics of the company's HD/HD2 products, as well as the HD Dailies Comfort Perfected™ lens edge design and Hypathin™ for exceptionally comfortable wear.
  • Global ophthalmic lens marketer and manufacturer Vision Ease recently launched a newly revamped website at VisionEase.com. The new site offers a responsive design, easy navigation, and enhanced tools and search functions to allow customers better interaction.
  • Transitions Optical, Inc. recently released a new series of educational videos for ECPs to learn more about the Transitions® products and technologies (see press release below). Each of the 12 short episodes -- which include topics such as blue light and the millennial mindset -- includes a one-page activity guide to reinforce key information and provides insights on how ECPs can apply what they have learned.
  • Luxury eyeglass lens producer SeikoVision has revamped its Seiko Elite rewards program more accessible and beneficial to ECPs in the U.S. (see press release below) Through the multi-tiered rewards program, ECPs can qualify for practice growth tools by selling a certain number of premium Seiko progressive addition lenses (PALs) each month.
  • And a new report from GfK says consumer spending on contact lenses across five key Asian countries — China, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia — increased by over 3 percent in the first eight months of 2016, compared to the same period last year, for a combined contact lens sales of over $622 million (see press release below).
