 The Lens Update — September 29, 2016

Here’s a look at the latest news in lenses and lens-related technologies. 

  • Transitions® lenses will make their debut on Lifetime's "Project Runway" this Thursday, September 29th, at 9pm PST (see press release below). The lenses will reportedly be featured in a design challenge, and the winner of the challenge will appear with their design in an exclusive Transitions lenses spread in Marie Claire magazine.
  • Sky Sight Vision, Inc. is offering a specialized tinting service for ECPs (see press release below). The company has reportedly developed a tri-tinted pattern for sunglasses that reduces glare and improves viewing between contrasting scenes. Originally designed to help jet pilots clearly see the instrument panel, this design works for vehicle and heavy equipment operators who experience glare or have difficulty seeing the dashboard or instrumental panel.
  • Signet Armorlite, Inc. recently announced a co-marketing agreement with MacuHealth® LP to promote Kodak Total Blue™ Lens and MacuHealth with LMZ3. Kodak Total Blue Lens are a unique hybrid of lens material and coating that filters High Energy Visible (HEV) blue light and protects against UV rays, while MacuHealth with LMZ3 is a nutritional supplement that quickly and effectively enriches macular pigment in both healthy and diseased eyes.
  • Additionally, Signet Armorlite announced the availability of Crossbows Optical lens designs from Signetek Optical Lab. The new progressive lenses range from a premium lens design customized to a patient’s specifications to basic, entry-level and are available in clear, photochromic, polarized, Total Blue™ clear and Total Blue polarized options.
  • PPG, Thai Optical Group and Global Optics Inc. have recently launched TRIBRID™ high-performance high-index lenses in North America. The lenses are reportedly available in semi-finished single vision clear lenses and are compatible with digital free-form processing and antireflective coatings.
  • Essilor of America has launched a national campaign for Xperio UV™ polarized sun lenses featuring eight-time AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) champion April Ross. The new campaign aims to educate consumers on how they can reduce their risk of overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and how they protect their eyes.
  • And Essilor was recently awarded a Simo d'Or award for its Eye Protect System™ -- a new lens that helps protect the eyes from harmful light by partially filtering out blue-violet light by absorption while remaining aesthetically clear. 
  • Vision Ease recently unveiled a new line of photochromic lenses that offer faster activation and fadeback, in addition to providing clearer indoor and darker outdoor performances compared to other photochromic lenses currently on the market (see press release below).
  • Blue Point Capital Partners, in conjunction with its portfolio company, Hilco Vision, has acquired Optiplus and Proteye. Optiplus is a distributor of eyewear accessories, tools and lens care in the Netherlands, while Proteye is a designer, manufacturer and distributor of RX industrial safety eyewear, sports frames and swimming goggles. 
  • HOYA Vision Care has expanded its New Media Optics portfolio with iD Space, Screen and Zoom — three new free form lens designs that use HOYA's patented Integrated Double Surface Design (IDSD) (see press release below).
  • Luxexcel NV — a 3D printer of lenses — has announced a technical collaboration with optical lab measurement equipment manufacturer Automation and Robotics (A&R) for a quality control program to help ensure 3D printed lenses will meet industry and user requirements.
  • In contact lens news, CooperVision, Inc. recently reported more than 2,000 practices have already received fitting sets as part of a phased rollout for its new Biofinity Energys™ contact lenses with Digital Zone Optics™ lens design, which were unveiled in late June.
  • Safilens has named Conil SG its exclusive distributor for its Fusion and Open contact lens lines in Switzerland and Liechtenstein for the next five years.
  • And contact lens ordering, managing and marketing system CLX is now fully integrated with Ocuco's Acuitas practice management software (see press release below). CLX helps streamline the way Acuitas users order contact lenses for their patients by providing single order entry capability, key metrics and profitability management, and marketing solutions.
