VSP, USC Launches Academic Study and Pilot Test for Smart Glasses

VSP Global® and the University of Southern California (USC) Center for Body Computing (CBC) are launching an academic study and consumer pilot test for VSP's tech-embedded eyewear.

Called Level™, the smart frames were reportedly developed by VSP's The Shop and Marchon Eyewear, and comes in three unisex styles. Although still in prototype mode, the frame is embedded with technology that allows a wearer's steps, calories burned and activity time to be tracked in conjunction with a smartphone app.

The pilot study will reportedly launch this month and will examine how individuals interact with the frames and app. Select eye care providers within the VSP network will reportedly also have an opportunity to test and provide feedback about the Level experience.

The study will be managed by USC CBC in partnership with USC Roski Eye Institute. The pilot study is expected to run through December with published results in early 2017.
