AOA Issues Statement Against VSP Premier Program

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recently released a statement addressing concerns about proposed changes to the Premier program of vision benefits provider VSP.

The AOA reportedly sent a letter on June 27th to VSP Global Chairman of the Board Dr. Daniel Mannen and signed by then AOA President Dr. Steven A. Loomis and then AOA President-Elect Dr. Andrea P. Thau. The letter reportedly outlined AOA's concerns, including VSP's proposed policy changes to its Premiere program that would go into effect on July 1, 2016. According to AOA, the new policy "would require doctors to purchase a certain amount of VSP-owned frame lines to maintain current levels of reimbursement to non-VSP frame purchases by VSP enrollees."

According to AOA, on July 1st VSP announced it would postpone the policy changes "to allow further review and consideration of frame reimbursements to relation to industry pricing and practices."
