Researchers Find Using Smartphone While in Bed Can Lead to Temporary Blindness

Researchers at the neuro-ophthalmology clinic at Moorfields Eye Hospital have found those that look at their smartphone in the dark while lying on their side in bed could be setting themselves up for temporary vision loss.

Researchers reportedly examined two patients who came to the clinic after experiencing recurring episodes of temporary blindness. They found both patients normally looked used their smartphones while lying on the side in their bed, resulting in one eye being covered by a pillow and the other being used to view the phone. This, researchers say, led to one eye got used to the dark while the other adapted to the smartphone's light — when both eyes were opened, the eye used to light could not handle the sudden darkness, causing them to experience temporary vision loss.

The study was recently published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
