
Earlier this month, Envision held the grand opening of the Gigi and Carl Allen Envision Research Institute (ERI), which will reportedly provide affiliates and collaborators the opportunity to fully engage in meaningful and applied vision research. The goal of ERI is to raise the standard of low vision patient care and remove functional barriers by conducting research on vision loss, early screenings, rehabilitation therapies, and accessibility technology.

Also this month, Envision teamed up with the City of Wichita Transit Department and mobile technology company Gimbal, Inc. to launch a joint pilot program using Gimbal Bluetooth Smart beacons at 1,200 Wichita Transit bus stops and Envision's two Wichita locations to help individuals who are blind or visually impaired using the mass transit system. The beacons reportedly broadcast navigational information and relevant messages to area smartphones, providing travelers with greater location accuracy than can be achieved with basic GPS applications. And mass transit users in Wichita are able to download a smartphone app for the new system.
