New Study Finds Nerve Damage May Precede Diabetic Retinopathy

A new study from researchers at the University of Iowa has found that nerve damage comes before blood vessel damage in patients who develop diabetic retinopathy.

According to the study, which was recently published online in the journal PNAS, these findings change what was previously considered the order of damage to the retina from diabetes. Researchers also found the nerve damage can occur in diabetic patients who never get retinopathy, resulting in a condition similar to glaucoma.
