FTC Sends Warning Letters Regarding Contact Lens Rule

Last week, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported it had sent a combined 55 letters to contact lens prescribers and sellers to warn them of potential violations to the agency's Contact Lens Rule, which could result in legal action and civil penalties.

According to the FTC, the Contact Lens Rule requires prescribers to give patients their prescription at the end of a contact lens fitting, and prohibits prescribers from charging a fee for a prescription or obligating patients to purchase contact lenses from them. And the Rule also specifies sellers can provide contact lenses to consumers only after they have been given a valid prescription or have verified the prescription with the prescriber.
