Study Finds Protamine May Lead to New Types of Contact Lens Disinfectant

New research from the University of New South Wales has found the natural protein protamine may be useful in developing new types of disinfectant solutions for contact lenses.

According to researchers, in laboratory tests protamine solution performed at least as well as current disinfectant solutions in killing microbes that can cause contact lens-related infections. However, more research is reportedly needed to assess the safety and effectiveness of protamine-containing solutions before they are adopted for broader use in contact lens care.

The study was recently published in Optometry and Vision Science, the official journal of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO).
