Researchers Find Repetitive Training Can Help Improve Athletes' Depth Perception

Researchers from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) in Germany have found the depth perception of athletes can be improved using repetitive stereoscopic stimuli.

The research team reportedly used a commercial vision training device to train 15 male soccer athletes for 12 15-minute sessions over a six-week period. The athletes were reportedly presented with images on a 3D-TV simulating moving soccer balls that appeared to be moving towards them -- subjects were required to pick out which ball was "in front" and indicate this as quickly as possibly by pointing to that ball.

By testing athletes with highly developed stereo acuity, researchers reportedly determined that repetitive training decreased their processing time, and that this ability was persistent for six months after the training ended.

Researchers believe their research as implications for non-athletes with impaired stereo vision.

The research was recently published in the journal Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience.
