New Study Finds Soft Contact Lenses Safe for Children

A new study by researchers at the University of Houston College of Optometry has found soft contact lenses can be safely prescribed to children and adolescents, with no increase in adverse effects compared to adults.

Researchers reportedly analyzed data from nine prospective studies that included 1,8000 "patient-years" of soft contact lens wear in patients aged seven to 19 years. Research evidence reportedly showed the incidence of corneal infiltrative events in children is no higher than in adults, with incidence markedly lower in the youngest age range which may be due to greater parental supervision. Additionally, researchers reportedly found incidences of microbial keratitis to be uncommon, with no cases reported in the prospective studies.

The study was recently published in the journal Optometry and Vision Science.
