UAB Researchers Find Vision Symptoms After Concussion Can Impact Child's Learning Ability

New research from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has found vision issues following a concussion can have an impact on a child's ability to learn, prompting researchers to urge for more comprehensive vision assessments for children reporting academic difficulty and in the development of return-to-learn protocols.

Researchers reportedly studied academic difficulties in 276 children ages five to 18 who reported three or more concussion-related symptoms present for 10 days or more, as well as a primary symptom of vision problems. Of the children studied, the research team found 29 percent reported academic difficulty, and 46 percent complained of vision abnormalities.

Through their findings, researchers believe vision care providers should play a larger role in the assessment of children post-concussion and their readiness to return-to-learn.

The study was recently published in the journal Optometry & Vision Science.
