New Study Finds Many Migrant Farmworkers Have Never Had a Vision Screening

A new study conducted by the Wake Forest School of Medicine found many migrant farmworkers have near and distance vision problems, but three-fourths have never had a vision screening test.

Funded by the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, researchers examined a representative sample of 289 Latino migrant farmworkers with uncorrected vision in North Carolina who underwent eye chart visual acuity testing and answered questions about their vision and vision care.

Researchers reportedly found 1.7 percent of the farmworkers had moderate to severe impairment (20/40 or worse) in distance, and another 6.9 percent had moderate to severe impairment in near vision. They also found about 74 percent of the farmworkers had never had a vision examination, with 70 percent saying they had "never thought about it" as the reason and 14 percent citing costs or lack of insurance.

The study was recently published in the journal Optometry and Vision Science
