Researchers Develop Longer-Lasting Eye Drop Technology

Researchers at McMaster University have developed a new eye drop technology that helps keep medicine on the eye rather than washing right back out.

Developed by chemical engineer Heather Sheardown and her graduate students, the new eye drop formulation reportedly uses microscopic packets of medication that adhere to the base of the eye's tear film. Once lodged, the molecular packets slowly release medication into the eye. According to researchers, this would ultimately allow patients with conditions such as dry eye and glaucoma taking daily eye drops to receive the same degree of treatment through eye drops applied only once a week.

The research team is reportedly in the final stages of proving the safety and efficacy of this new eye drop technology, which was also recently spotlighted in the journal Biomacromolecules.
