Researchers Identify 5 New Genetic Markers for PACG

A team of researchers have reportedly identified five new genetic loci — or locations of a gene — that are at an increased risk for primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG).

Published online earlier this week by Nature Genetics, the researchers conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) followed by replication, looking at a combined 10,503 PACG cases and 29,567 controls taken from 24 countries across Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Australia.

During the study, the researchers reportedly observed "significant evidence of disease association at five new genetic loci upon meta-analysis of all patient collections." Also during the study, the researchers found additional information for three previously-discovered loci associated with PACG.
