New Research Says Nerve Cell Injury May be to Blame for Diabetes-Related Vision Loss

Washington University School of Medicine

Scientists from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri have found evidence to suggest nerve cell injury -- rather than blood vessel damage -- is the real culprit behind vision loss in those with diabetic retinopathy.

ImageThrough their study, researchers found nerve damage in the retina happened long before any blood vessels were damaged. They believe the findings -- which were published in the April issue of the journal Diabetes -- may bring out new approaches to how diabetes-related vision loss is treated as most current treatments are aimed at damaged blood vessels.
