Study Finds Regular Marijuana Use May Impact Retinal Function

A new study conducted by researchers at the Pole Hospitalo-Universitaire de Psychiatrie du Grand Nancy in France has found the regular use of marijuana may have an impact on vision.

Researchers reportedly studied 52 participants — 28 of which were regular cannabis users — and using a standard electrophysiological measurement called pattern electroretinography (PERG) found evidence of a delay of 10 milliseconds in the transmission of action potentials evoked by the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in cannabis users.

Researchers believe this anomaly may account for altered vision in regular cannabis users, and their findings may be important from a public health perspective as they highlight the neurotoxic effects of cannabis use on the central nervous system as a result of how it affects retinal processing.

The study was recently published in JAMA Ophthalmology.
