AAO Announces Winner of Public Health and Environmental Vision Award

The Public Health and Environmental Vision (PHEV) Section of the American Academy of Optometry recently announced Dr. Melvin D. Shipp, past dean of The Ohio State University, College of Optometry (OSU), as the winner of the 2017 Henry B. Peters Award for Public Health and Environmental Vision.

According to AAO, the award annually recognizes an individual who has made exemplary contributions to public health and/or environmental vision over many years.

Shipp is reportedly being honored for his significant contributions in many areas that demonstrate the importance the PHEV Section places on public health activities by optometrists. As a faculty member at the UAB School of Optometry he reportedly taught public health to optometry students, and he was the first optometrist to lead the American Public Health (APHA) and promoted optometry within that organization and to the public at large.
