March has been designated as Workplace Eye Wellness Month, and a number of organizations have resources available to help you educate your patients — as well as your own employees — about eye injury prevention while on the job.
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), every day about 2,000 U.S. works sustain a job-related eye injury requiring medical treatment. However, 90 percent of these accidents can reportedly be avoided by wearing eye protection.
The AAO recently issued a number of tips for workers on how to avoid workplace eye injury or strain, such as wearing protective eyewear that is American National Standards Institute ANSI-approved and OSHA compliant, and how to reduce glare and eye strain when working on a computer for long periods of time. Prevent Blindness has a variety of free information available to help teach employers and employees about eye injury prevention, as well as the impact digital devices can have on vision due to long-term screen exposure and dangerous blue light.
Prevent Blindness offers a Work Safety module through its free Healthy Eyes Education Series. Each module includes a presentation guide and corresponding PowerPoint presentation on a relevant eye health topic, such as adult eye disorders, eye anatomy, healthy living, low vision and various safety topics. Additionally, free fact sheets can be downloaded from the Prevent Blindness website for use as handouts to accompany the program.
Additionally, Prevent Blindness is again partnering with Healthe and its EyeSafe® technologies, through which Healthe will donate a portion of sales of its EyeSafe products — including protective covers for digital phones, tablets and computer monitors that reduce exposure to harmful digital UV and High-Energy Visible (HEV) blue light emitted from such devices — to Prevent Blindness in support of its children’s eye health programs and resources.
