Here’s a quick look at some industry news you may have missed this week.

  • According to a recent article in Canada's National Post, researchers at the University of British Columbia have found men with glaucoma are more than two and-a-half times more likely to have erectile dysfunction. The researchers reportedly believe inflamed blood vessels may be to blame.
  • A recent study in the journal Optometry & Vision Science found that direct glare conditions from computer screens caused not only increased eyestrain, but also impacted the trapezius muscle — which extends over the back of the neck and shoulders — causing neck pain.
  • The Optical Society (OSA) is currently accepting submissions for a feature issue of Biomedical Optics Express that will celebrate the 25th anniversary of optical coherence tomography (OCT). The submission deadline is October 31, 2016.
  • Zyloware Eyewear recently celebrated the upcoming 10-year anniversary of Randy Jackson Eyewear at Ascent Lounge in New York City, and to launch the #NoExcuses campaign -- a platform to promote looking and feeling your best through things such as annual eye exams and going bold with on-trend eyewear. Randy Jackson himself was on hand, and also spent time at Zyloware's headquarters in Port Chester, N.Y. the next day.
  • EP Global Communications, Inc. was recently notified of an allowance from the United States Patent & Trademark Office on its first patent, US 14/668,957 "System for Contact Lens Wireless Communication."  With this allowance, EPGL now has several patents pending in the new field of "smart contact lenses" and "augmented vision" technology.
  • And a recent study presented at this year's World Congress of Anaesthesiologists (WCA) says children using iPads to distract them before surgery requiring general anesthesia is as effective at lowering their anxiety as conventional sedatives. Additionally, parental satisfaction and quality of anesthesia induction was greater in children who used an iPad prior to surgery.
