Here’s a quick look at some industry news you may have missed this week.

  • Earlier this week, the Foundation Fighting Blindness recently announced its Gordon and Llura Gund Family Challenge has raised more than $109 million in new funding for retinal disease research, exceeding its goal by $9 million. The Challenge's success will reportedly allow the Foundation to increase its funding for advanced pre-clinical research and clinical trials that will continue to advance sight-preserving and restoring treatments.
  • University of Alabama at Birmingham faculty and Ph.D. candidates Dr. Anna Ablamowicz and Cameron Postnikoff have been named Ezell Fellows by the American Optometric Foundation (AOF). The William C. Ezell Fellowships are offered by the AOF to encourage talented individuals to pursue full-time careers in optometric research and education.
  • The American Optometric Association (AOA) issued a consumer-related press release reminding parents about the importance of back-to-school eye exams. The release included four eye health and safety tips and talked about the importance of comprehensive eye exams for learning.
  • Topcon recently announced it has shipped its 10,000th optical coherence tomography (OCT) device (see press release below). The milestone reportedly reflects the growing global market demand for OCT systems.
  • A recent survey conducted on behalf of the Canadian Association of Optometrists found that parents rank child eye health as one of their lowest health priorities, with only 25 percent choosing it as one of their top three concerns. The survey also found almost half of Canadian parents did not know vision issues could be the reason behind a child's short attention span. 
  • Bausch + Lomb (B+L) sent out a letter to ECPs from Director of Professional Strategy for U.S. Vision Care Dr. Jill Saxon to remind them of programs they have put in place to help ECPs during the hectic back-to-school season, including B+L's Same-Day dispensing program.
  • Optovue has formed a distribution agreement with ROCOL SA, a medical equipment distributor in Colombia, in an effort to advance eye care in the Colombian market. Also this week, Optovue announced the availability of DualTrac™ Motion Correction technology on the AngioVue™ Imaging System.
  • Pharmaceutical company Roche recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of Roche Continents — an annual event that brings over 1,000 students from European universities together for a series of workshops based around science, art and innovation.
  • Canon U.S.A., Inc. recently displayed its teleretinal imaging solution at this year's American Association of Diabetes Educators Annual Meeting and Exhibition in San Diego. The system on display included Canon's CR-2 PLUS AF Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal camera and imageSPECTRUM Image Management System software.
  • First Insight Corporation recently announced its practice management and EHR software MaximEyes now integrates with payment credit card processing services from Vantiv Integrated Payments, allowing it to accept EMV-enabled chip card technology.
  • 2020 On-Site Optometry recently announced a new partnership with Boston Public Schools (BPS) to provide students with visions screenings and free glasses. 2020 On-Site Optometry also plans launch a T-shirt campaign for the partnership — with every T-shirt purchased, a free pair of glasses will be given to a BPS student.
  • To help support parents as kids head back to school, Sam’s Club® is offering free adult health screenings — including vision screenings — at a number of locations this Saturday, August 13th.
